Job Description

UMAA is seeking to employ qualified and experienced persons to fill the position of a Senior Leading Hand Underground Fitter.
This is Obuasi based Fixed Term Contract position with a competitive work roster at its operation in Obuasi. Remuneration package includes attractive salary and performance-based incentive payments for the right candidate.

Senior Leading Hand Underground Fitter.

The Senior Leading Hand underground Fitter provides leadership and hands-on expertise in maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing heavy mobile equipment in underground mining operations. The role ensures equipment availability, reliability, and compliance with safety standards through effective supervision, planning, and technical work.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of heavy-duty fitters and apprentices, providing guidance and oversight
  • Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on underground mobile equipment
  • Prioritize and allocate maintenance tasks to ensure minimal operational downtime
  • Conduct pre-start inspections, risk assessments, and ensure compliance with site safety procedures
  • Communicate regularly with maintenance planners and supervisors for task coordination
  • Ensure all work is performed to statutory, OEM, and company standards
  • Complete and review maintenance records, job cards, and CMMS entries accurately
  • Order and manage spare parts and tools as needed
  • Train and develop team members to ensure trade compliance and operational effectiveness
  • Lead or support continuous improvement initiatives in equipment reliability and safety
  • Participate in shutdowns and major equipment overhauls.


Required Skills or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering, or equivalent technical qualification.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ post-trade experience as a Heavy-Duty Fitter in an underground mining environment
  • At least 2 years in a leading hand or supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintenance of underground mobile equipment (e.g., Sandvik, CAT, Epiroc, Atlas Copco).
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and diesel systems.
  • Exposure to computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Proven safety track record in a high-risk, high-performance environment.
  • Ability to lead by example and foster a safety-first, team-focused culture.
  • Strong diagnostic skills and ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues.
  • Takes ownership of work, team outcomes, and operational targets.
  • Clear and respectful communication across multiple stakeholders and shifts.
  • Can work under pressure and adjust to changing operational priorities.
  • Proactively identifies and addresses maintenance or safety issues.
  • Maintains a high standard of workmanship and documentation.
  • Embeds safety in every task and encourages others to do the same.
